The third week that I was in Ghana, a group of us decided to visit the Northern Region during the Muslim holiday of Eid. The Northern Region of Ghana is predominantly Muslim, much more rural than urban Accra. While we were there, we formed a strong connection with our tour guide who was from a local Muslim community. He invited us to celebrate the Eid with his family, which is not an invitation often extended to "outsiders". We got to witness the community prayer which involved thousands of people, followed by a celebration of animal sacrifices and a feast cooked over an open bonfire. We not only watched the full sacrifice routine, but took part in the feast with the community. It was an experience I will never forget. I am still in touch with many people from that community today.
